If you are reading this I would guess you’ve at least thought about getting fit. That thought itself may be enough to break you out in a sweat. You haven’t exercised in years. If at all. And you’re worried about the amount of effort it’s going to take to get you where you want to be. Fear not. Here’s a guide to getting fit by doing the least amount of exercise possible.

To tell you a bit about me first. There’s 2 things I used to know very well. Laziness and how to smoke tons of weed. I have written another post where I talk about the personal development books that helped me change my life. But I couldn’t improve my mind without also improving my body. The two go hand in hand.

The reason why I am writing this guide is because I heard something today that made me angry. I know someone who has decided to get fit. I don’t know how much they have ever exercised. If at all. They’ve joined a gym and got a personal trainer. A personal trainer that has them scheduled in for 5 consecutive days training at 40 minutes per session.

I have no experience of this other than what I have read and what I have learned that works through practical application. But I do know this. That person is doomed to fail unless they have a very strong motivating purpose and a will of Iron. Which, if they are only starting to exercise now after years of inactivity, is highly doubtful.

Thing is. It’s not their fault. It’s their trainer’s fault. A trainer who, not only is getting paid for his terrible service and advice, runs the risk of ruining this opportunity the person has to get fit by putting them off before they have properly begun.

Today was their 3rd day. They didn’t go. They were too sore from the previous days training. The future does not look bright.

So here it is. The simple secrets that took me from someone who hadn’t exercised since my teenage years. Someone who hated exercise (and still does by the way). To someone who now works out almost daily, at least every 2nd day, for 45 minutes to an hour. I’m not going to be running any marathons soon. Not going to be entering any CrossFit competitions. But I’m fitter and stronger than I ever was and will only get better.

It’s not a quick remedy. Not an instant cure to your laziness. But it’s the easiest way to get yourself to the level of fitness you want. You don’t even have to join a gym or get a personal trainer.

Step 1     Change Your Clothes

This seems stupid, right? What does changing your clothes matter? Well, it matters a lot. My advice to anyone who casually wears trainers on a day-to-day basis. Stop. You’ve made them a source of comfort. You’ve associated them with doing what you do on a daily basis. Which I’m guessing if you’ve read this far doesn’t involve any exercise. I’ll explain more about this later.

Step 2     Make your training area as easy as possible to get to

Look, you don’t have to go to the gym. I’m sure there’s somewhere in your house that would have enough space. Maybe you have a little shed. Maybe you have good enough weather that you can even do what you need outside. The point is, the quicker you can get to where you are going to exercise the more likely you are to get there. You’re not going to be put off by the amount of time and effort it’s going to take before you can begin doing what you really want to do.

Step 3     Set a schedule

Ok, you need some sort of schedule. Find what days and what time of day suits you best. You only need to set aside a maximum of 5 minutes of your day. If that’s too much do even less. You can start with as many days of the week you want to although from my experience you don’t want to do anymore than 3. That’s a maximum of 15 minutes in one week. I’m sure you can manage that quite easily.

Step 4     Do as little as possible and don’t break a sweat!

So, you’re all geared up, ready to begin. What exercise should you do? Frankly, do what you want! If you fancy a bit of running on the spot, some push-ups, sit-ups. If you have weights you can use those. There’s a host of exercises to choose from. Pick the exercise that you find, if not enjoyable, then the least taxing. You’ll know what you are capable off to begin with. Just make sure to go easy on yourself.

For example: If you’re in a bad way fitness wise and it’s a struggle to get up from your seat. Then do that. Put a chair where you want to exercise and keep sitting and getting up again. The important thing is to go as easy as possible. If you even feel a bead of sweat gathering on your forehead, or anywhere else for that matter, just stop. That’s it. You’re done. Session over.

Step 5     Repeat Steps 1 to 4 for months

That’s right. That’s all you have to do. That’s as easy as it gets. Just keep sticking to your schedule for as many months as it takes for it to become really comfortable. Until it becomes a solid, regular thing in your life. Something you don’t really think about when you go to do it.

It is after these few months that the real magic begins to happen.

You see all this time you haven’t really been exercising that much. You might not have seen any real improvement in your level of fitness. Maybe a little tiny bit but not what you imagined when you first thought about getting fit. It might not seem that you have done or achieved very much. But you have. You’ve done the most important thing of all. You’ve created the habit of exercising.

The reason I talked about changing your clothes and not wearing trainers on a daily basis is because now when you do that you will have programmed your mind that you are going to do some exercise. The second those clothes and trainers are put on your mind automatically assumes you are now going to exercise. The innate drive to then get exercising will compel you onwards. I can’t put my trainers on now without having to exercise. The impulse is too great. It will eat away at my mind until I do so. That is the power of habit and association.

Once that habit has been established you can judge for yourself how far you want to push yourself on with your training sessions. Just keep gradually increasing the difficulty and you’ll find your fitness increasing with it. Now you are free to sweat as much as you want.

For me it was simply about adding a few repetitions with my weights. Then, over time, a few more. Then I added another exercise to my routine. Gradually, over the course of a year, my session has went from not even a few minutes to almost an hour. If I had started trying to push myself as hard as I do now at the beginning I would have quit on that exercise a long time ago. Now I know I will never stop.

So there you have it. The laziest guide to fitness. It doesn’t take much other than time. It’s not an instant fix but it will set you up for life so what’s the hurry. There’s not much to it. So what are you waiting for. Go get that level of fitness you deserve.

  1. Hmmm…interesting and logical way, to be honest. I guess traveling stairs is even excersise. Has it taken you a year to stick to a strict schedule of 45 mins of training a day? And also, have you ever thought of stopping?

    1. Hi, no, about 6 months. But I was trying to push myself on a bit harder.
      Oh, I hate exercise. There are days I really don’t want to do it. But then I just put my gear on and it helps me get on with it. Plus once you do enough of it you get to like the feel good factor after.

  2. Whatever works to get you moving regularly and into a routine is great, Chris. I was lazy about an exercise program for my first 63 years of life. Oh, I walked, biked, skied, did yard work, etc., but no fixed regimen. Our friends brought us this DVD from Arizona, where a fitness guy did exercises with a cheap exercise strap, a couple of dumbbells and a child’s rubber ball. The message was strength, flexibility and balance. The DVD sat there for 2 years (that was my laziness). We started doing the routine and liked it even though it damn near killed us the first time. After 6 times, I took that 55 minute DVD and made it 64 minutes long by adding in reps and then because we were bored with the same old nasty disco music, I made 3 other versions with my fave tunes and now we do the routine every 2 days. I can not believe how much muscle I have put on and how much more energy I have. Also, no more sciatic problems. Now looking at Tai Chi for the alternate days to get other muscles exercised and found an old VHS of David Carradine (Kung Fu TV show). What a hoot, but it works. I now have different muscles that hurt. Keep on moving. Allan

      Wow! 63?! Now that would be something worth writing about. Bound to inspire many! Kudos good Sir.
      I had to laugh at the 2 years. That’s normally the way it goes haha I remember getting weights of someone and they just sat in my shed unused. Although it wasn’t that long.
      Am sure it was very tough to begin with and that was quite ingenious the way you added to the routine.
      Aha I remember Kung Fu well. Even quoted it to a friend last week. He was talking about trying meditation and hearing the sounds around him. I asked did he hear the grasshopper at his feet haha
      Having different muscles that hurt is good. Means we’re doing something right.

Hello there, feels like it has been 100 years, good to be here finally, i could talk a lot about this topic, because healthy life style and physical activity is something, what helps me to move forward. I never had a trainer, i believe, that if you really want it you can do it alone, i mean, people know how to run right? It is the best way to dry out and smiling at the pool or in the see, helps to my muscles stronger, i do exercises at the gym, because i dont have enough weights at home, but personal trainer? Come on. Schedule, exactly, every morning at 6am i run, doesnt matter if it is raining, storm, or 39degrees of hotness, those are great tips, finally someone route something useful about it, have a good end of week, i stay motivated, because i’m watching you😁no feet up😁

  4. If anything was to encourage me to exercise Chris, this might just be it!! Thought provoking post.

    I wonder if you were familiar with fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue would you alter your Lazy Guide in any way?
    I like the pool but it’s 30 mins drive away, which tires me in itself. I try to take a walk once or twice a week, 20 minutes, relaxed steady pace. Sometimes after my walk I am fine, can continue my usual day, sometimes it can take up to 4 hours for the post exercise malaise to pass. Exercise was not important a few years ago but I am concerned now that as I age, it will be difficult to manage any weight gain or stay relatively fit.

    1. That’s very nice of you to say so Marie. That’s what I was going for. So many people get put off by the gym types that think you have to bust a gut for an hour every day. That’s ok if you can manage it down the line but not to begin with.
      Unfortunately I’m not familiar with that. That’s why I advised to do as little as possible. Just what you feel comfortable in managing. Everyone knows their own limits best. If you have any suggestions from your experience feel free to tell me. I would be more than happy to add them in.

      1. Thanks Chris, I like that angle…”to do as little as possible” it resonates with me as I manage to live the best possible life with fibro/fatigue. What has sat with me over the past few days is the ‘intention’ to exercise! I’m off for a walk now as a result!

Wake up after 2 hours in bed, get ready for work with weights strapped to your ankles and have burning pain in your arms when you lift the hairdryer to dry your hair for more than a few minutes, as if you were pumping weights at the gym…that’s a general intro, but don’t stay home and wallow because the tiredness is like quicksand, it sucks you in when you let go the accelerator and Most importantly practice gratitude for what you have in your life!!     Hello Chris, hope you’re good and not disappearing for some issue!

    Easy steps for guaranteed results, won’t call them laziest guide but the most practical I guess because you just can’t go from 1 to 10 and skip from 2 to 9 steps…some people are stronger than others, yes but we must be logical that most people aren’t! I’m like you, I hated sports my entire life even though I had a very active childhood, running and playing and climbing, but never has this mentality of workout and at some time, you feel you have enough problems to think about this luxury…until you reach the point where you realize that you don’t need much money to do lot of things, oh well years pass and you create your habits and stuff!

    So your post is so logical! And I feel sorry for this person you mentioned, this personal trainer is using the tough way but it doesn’t work with most of people! I mean not everyone has this Bruce Lee spirit.
    I agree with the steps you mentioned, mostly the clothes! The mentality is so important and plays a big role, your brain feels these things and applies…So I get you and I also recommend buying sports clothes, I feel my brain loves this even though I work out at home but still

    1. Hi Huguette, Hope you are keeping well. Sorry I haven’t been around much. Been feeling a bit overwhelmed this week in regards to other stuff I have to do and little life problems. Trying to get back on track with Word Press now 🙂 Sort’ve touched on it in my latest post.
      You hated sports too! ahah I can’t even watch them either and the whole mentality you find with the likes of football supporters drives me crazy.
      The person I mentioned got a bit pissed off at what I said even though it wasn’t directed at her but at her trainer. She said she’s going to work really hard to prove me wrong. If she does that’s great. Least I’ve given her some more motivation. If she doesn’t however….hahaha

        Been really overwhelmed this week and truthfully had been feeling down. Didn’t have the luxury of wallowing though as someone else was in a more difficult position than I and needed some support. (It wasn’t A).
        I guess you would know what it’s like when people lean on you for support when you’ve got your own shit to deal with as well.
        I’m even annoyed with that post. It was a bit whiney. It has given me an idea for something else though so not all bad.
        I must do better at staying on top of the important things.

      3. Yes it’s hard I know but sometimes we have to be stronger when someone needs us and we need to forget a bit about our problems , not easy 😕😕 especially when things are not perfect for us and everything seems to come altogether

  6. I just cane in from my brief walk around my neighborhood and read your post and said “hey, this is what I just did”. I am fast approaching my 70th birthday and this approach to exercise is the only one that works for me. No pressure. Just regularly doing a walking routine and I hardly broke a sweat. Thanks for sharing this excellent advice. It really works

    1. Ah That’s great to hear! I think people get put off by all the personal trainer, gym going, people. It’s best to take things at your own pace at least that way it is easier to continue with. Any exercise is better then none.
